Officially they have changes this policy but there were always options to having a second child in China. I will use my wife family and friends as a real life experience. My wife was born in 1981 which only 1 child was allowed, but since she was the first and a female and lived in the rural area they technically could have another child. Her father wanted to have another child because males are preferred in China to take care of their parents when they get older. That’s why ultrasounds are illegal in China if they find out it is a girl then most likely they will have an abortion which is sad. Ultrasounds are only used when it is medically required for health reasons. My mother in-law was against having another child because it is expensive to have several children and education is top priority and it is expensive, so she decided to only have the 1 child. My wife still argues this with her father to this day. My wife best friend (her age) is still struggling with her in-laws because their first child is a girl and her in-laws want a boy so they are under a lot of pressure to have another child and they said if it is not a girl then abortion but my wife’s friend said no way if they try for another baby then they will keep it boy or girl. But the old school parents want a boy and there is so much pressure, it is sad. The culture in China does not rely on the government to take care of them in old age and it is up to the children which are a great idea but less need to be stress on a boy because girls can support the family as well.
