Another Chinese village bites the dust for factories at my wife’s grandmother’s village. I was amazed by the news but no big deal to my wife’s family other than they will receive a large sum of money. It will definitely affect grandmother because she has lived in the same house for 60 years. Her actual house is very old around 200 square feet but her son who is head of the family built a house attached to her building. But she lives in the same very small living space. The bathroom was traditionally outside (basket for fertilizer)((I used it during my first visit back in 2004)), small cooking area used for heating the space was well. Small garden outside and a pond a few steps from her doorway were the rice is cleaned, clothes cleaned, fish caught, and hands washed.
I feel bad for her because she has lived there for 60 years and now will go to a house that they will rent or the government will supply an apartment. Both situations will not be ideal for her because she is nearly blind but know where the pond is to clean items and where everything around her living space is located. Yes, they will receive money but money to her is not necessary at her age and living condition. I love the attached photo which was taken during our October 2013 visit and she wanted to give us a fish and took the live fish and a large butcher knife went to the pond and cleaned the fish for us to take to the in-laws house, she did it so efficiently and like clockwork. Amazing!
I am glad I took so many photos of the houses and village during our travels there and it will look totally different on our next visit coming soon. China changes so fast and every visit looks very different each trip.
