Why are cities the Friendliest and Un-Friendliest.
Why are cities the friendliest and Un-friendliest around the world and I must defend the 3 countries in the Un-friendliest list, Russia, China and France. All rated as unfriendly but I disagree and have several thoughts why travelers may think this. All 3 have 2 major difficulties for the common travelers which are language and culture differences. If you do not understand the language then the culture difference translates to a negative experience and when you are on holiday it is all about the experience. I recommend all travelers learn about the foreign country you are visiting before ever landing, learn the basic language and know the culture differences.
All 3 countries would be my friendliest cities for me because I travel to learn new experience with understanding the culture differences and not judge but learning to accept and learn something new. Most travelers want to judge and compare with their native country and we all think our life style if better.
France was one of the friendliest countries for us, we were greeting by locals helping us without asking. We showed respected and spoke in the basic language and we received great service at cafes. We learned the culture and we slowed down our itinerary which included long lunches and dinners. We cut back our sightseeing places to slow down and relax. We greeted everyone in shops and cafes with basic hello and goodbyes, and thank you which went along way.
Russia was my first real international destination with locals which are more reserved with travelers but once you break the ice and eat and drink with them they are great hosts.
China is and will always be my friendliest country for me. I have so many random acts of kindness in China it gets overwhelming. We get hosted with expensive dinners when some cannot afford it but want to entertain us and show us a welcoming time in China. We meet a lot of people with a lot less than most and they are the friendliest and are the most generous. But most travelers have a difficult time with the language and the cultural differences which include personal space, splitting, loud conversation, real Chinese food, toilets, and no lines (organized chaos).
Most tourist locations are NOT that friendly because the people dealing with tourist all day long and it are a stressful at times. We live in Las Vegas and rarely go on the strip but when we do I always start to tell anyone I am a local and I will get treated differently.
NOT a surprise the friendliest cities are the English speaking destinations and cultures similar to our own western life styles. Travel should take us out of our comfort zone!
