In small towns and villages when someone works on your house or fixes your computer lunch or dinner is usually offered. My in-laws had several government workers at their house replacing a water meter and they were offered lunch, which we got to see and chat with them on Skype last night. When my wife had our apartment interior built she and parents had lunches with the workers throughout the process and had to have a final dinner when the work was completed. Last Chinese New Year we had a local tech person set-up our new wireless device and he stayed for lunch. One reason is that there is not a subway, KFC, McDonalds on every corner in the smaller towns and villages for service people to have stop. Some of these villages are remote. It is a form of tip and respect for a job well done. Always a cigarette is included as well and they may drink with us if they are not traveling to another appointment afterwards. I first thought it was very strange to offer a complete stranger to stay for a meal after they did a service for you in your own house but it is typical in China. I can tell you it goes a long way and you get better service and if there is a problem they are always glad to come back to resolve the issue.
