When you give a gift to someone in China they will never open it in front of you, it is opened in private at home. I learned this from giving my in-laws boxes of chocolates and many other gifts but they would never open them with me. They would take the gifts and put them in another room and would open them later. I really never knew if they liked the chocolates or other gifts then my wife said why I did not bring chocolates last trip. I replied by I did not think they liked the chocolates because I never seen them eating them or telling me they liked them. But I learned gifts are never opened in front of the guest and is done in private which is another cultural difference between China and the US. So if you travel halfway around the world to China and bring gifts just be aware you may never know if they really enjoyed the gifts. But they are very grateful you brought them a gift out of respect and I encourage you bring a gift if you are planning to meet any local Chinese in China.
