China celebrated another holiday called Dragon Boat Festival which is a remembrance of Qu Yuan. The traditional food is a sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves called Zong Zi. It is believed that upon Qu Yuan’s death in the river the locals throw in Zong Zi so the fish would not eat Qu Yuan. In China my mother in-law delivers the ingredients to her mother (75 years old) and she will make them for all of the family. The sticky rice dumpling is very gelatin in texture and is usually funky for the US taste buds but they are good when they are fresh. In China they are eaten everywhere. This week we went fishing with our Chinese friends in Vegas at Lake Mead and they brought us some Zong Zi, so we celebrated not in a boat race but in a fishing race, they won!
